Cosmopolitics of the Camera. Albert Kahn’s Archives of the Planet

Edited by Trond Erik Bjorli and Kjetil Ansgar Jakobsen, Bristol/Chicago, Intellect Ltd, 2020

On sale at the Museum's bookshop from 25 October / En vente à la librairie du musée à partir du 25 octobre

The Archives of the Planet completed a string of institutions for research and international cooperation established by Albert Kahn and the circle of intellectuals, businessmen and diplomats who met in his utopian World Gardens in Boulogne-Billancourt from around 1910 until the early 1930s. What is since 1946 known as the UNESCO, working to protect and further the cultural heritage of mankind, had its first beginnings in the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation (ICIC), which was formed by the League of Nations in 1922, and recruited to a large extent from within the Boulogne circle. Henri Bergson, who was its first director, secured a permanent seat in Paris for the ICIC.

In the new book Cosmopolitics of the Camera, ten expert voices from seven different countries, analyze the work of Kahn and his key collaborators, the geographer Jean Brunhes and the philosopher Henri Bergson, in the spirit of their culturally diverse venture, placing it in its proper historical and intellectual context, and exploring its ambitious achievements and failures. By pushing the work of the Kahn circle back into active discussion, the analysis forces us to reflect on the ways our world is shaped and recorded by the technological media, and reactivates the time capsule that Kahn designed to communicate with the future.
