The life and work of Albert Kahn (1860-1940), who devoted his entire fortune to a humanistic project promoting universal peace and understanding at the turn of the twentieth century, are truly a source of fascination. A keen enthusiast of both cultural diversity and nature, he fully embraced the technical innovations of his time-cinematography, stereoscopic photography and the autochrome process- to compile an inventory featuring images of a rapidly changing world: Les Archives de la Planète.
These remarkable images at the Musée Départemental Albert Kahn in Boulogne-Billancourt form a unique collection. The past comes to life through the luminous colors of the autochromes and the film footage, while the garden, with species from all over the world, provides an exceptionnally lush setting in wich to share this dream of harmony.
Luce Lebart is a historian of photography, exhibition curator, and researcher affiliated with the Archive of Modern Conflict collection. She is the author of general works such as A Global History of Women Photographers, co-edited with Marie Robert (2020), and The Great Photographers of the 20th Century (2017), as well as several books based on photographic archives, including Mold is Beautiful, Lady Liberty, Gold and Silver, and Inventions (1915-1938).
