Résidence Modèles perdus

19th november 2024 - 23th march 2025

For the third edition of its creative residency, the musée départemental Albert-Kahn invites sculptor Marina Mankarios to take over la salle des plaques.

Marina Mankarios proposes to explore the museum's collections through the approach of lost or endangered heritage in the Near East, focusing on two themes: political destruction and the climate crisis.

Using autochromes from the Archives of the Planet, Marina Mankarios extracts an architectural detail, which she copies, molds, and reproduces in multiple copies, each with unique imperfections and gaps. These sculptural fragments will be gathered within the space of the Plaques Room – echoing the endangered or lost heritage – bringing these destroyed works back to life.

The work produced by Marina Mankarios will highlight the connection between photography and sculpture as fragmentary works, playing with the concepts of negative/positive, printing, and also emphasizing the importance of perspective in the creation and perception of a work of art.

Discover our artist in residence

Born in Paris in 1996, Marina Mankarios grew up in a Coptic Egyptian family, immersing herself from a young age in the history and culture of this country.

Graduating in 2019, she presented her first exhibition, "Molding is not Copying," a collection of sculptures that play on the repetition of molding to generate new works.

Setting up her studio in Paris, Marina Mankarios continues her research on Greco-Roman statuary and explores questions surrounding memory and the disappearance of historical heritage, playing with material and space to illustrate oblivion, what is missing, and what will forever vanish from our history.

Her works have been exhibited at Dutch Design Week, Sobering Gallery in Paris, and more recently at Villa Gabrielle. In 2023, she joined the Lasource residency and showcased her project at the Musée Rodin in Paris. Since 2021, she has been a member of the collective Le Cercle de l'Art, bringing together emerging French women artists.
